Murmansk is the administrative center of the Murmansk region, one of the largest Russian ports and the largest city in the world which is located beyond the Arctic Circle. Historians note that the word “Murman” in translation from the Scandinavian languages means “northern man” and Murmansk is indeed a city of northern people.
The city was founded in the 4th of October, 1916 and first was called “Romanov on Murman” but six months later was renamed into “Murmansk”. Despite the lack of historical monuments, this unique city is very beautiful and original. The main attractions here are associated with nature, numerous war memorials and, of course, the northern lights.
Starting from the beginning of December till the middle of January you can observe the polar night when the sun doesn’t rise above the horizon. During the winter you can also observe rare optical phenomenon that creates two, three and even five suns in the sky. And, of course, you get the opportunity to see the real northern lights.
