FRESH AIR OF THE NORTH

If you have already enjoyed the cultural part of Russia and are in search of something different yet authentic and local, take a train from #Saint Petersburg to #Petrozavodsk which will bring you to the northern part of #CentralRussia and closer to the border with #Finland – the region of #Karelia. There, in the wildlands of waterfalls, among deer and moose, in the middle of virgin nature of the north you will find a completely different experience. .

Karelia has a lot to offer to an exigent traveler: sledges driven by husky or calm surroundings of the lakes and forests. Try the famous #Kalitka and some of the moose meat helping if you are into it and then take a historical steam train to arrive in #Ruskeala, the underground reservoir formed as a result of the marble extraction in soviet times which made Karelia and its Karelian marble famous in the world. Take a walk around the reservoir and then don’t hesitate to buy a ticket to visit Ruskeala caves.

After that have a delicious meal in one of the local restaurants and run to see the waterfalls – #Kivach et #Ahvenkoski. Tough names, right? Well, they are hard even for us, Russians, as they are Finnish. The territory of the region before the war belonged to Finland and the indigenous population in most are Karelians. That is why you are likely to hear different traditional songs and you will be able to visit one of the real Karelian villages where the locals will show you to their national traditions: dance, sing, drink tea with Karelian cakes and then stay overnight in one of the wooden hotel-houses in the open nature.

You will want to return♥️
