TOBOLSK: WHY THE FORMER CAPITAL OF SIBERIA ISN’T INCLUDED IN THE CLASSIC TRANS-SIBERIAN ROUTE.

Do you know that Tobolsk was the capital of Siberia for many centuries almost since its founding in 1587? The city played a huge role in the development of Siberia and for a long time was the largest trade and political centre of the whole territory from the Urals to Vladivostok.

Why now is it a small town with only 100 000 inhabitants? Why doesn’t the main railway – Trans-Siberian Railway – pass through it?

According to one version, the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway was originally planned just through Tobolsk, but at that time the steamship owners and locals linked their well-being and prosperity with the development of river freight and passenger transport. The railroad threatened to destroy the usual way of life. The population and community of stakeholders were opposed and the result of their efforts was that the railway bypassed Tobolsk. So once a big city turned into a quiet provincial city with a rich history.

Just spend a half day visiting important historical sights, such as:
?The white-stone Kremlin constructed at the end of the 17th century & Cathedral of St. Sophia with bell tower 75 meters has been perfectly preserved in Tobolsk;
?The Prison Castle built near the Kremlin in 1838 was a transit-convict prison. Such famous people as Dostoevsky, Chernyshevsky, Solzhenitsyn and others were prisoners who passed through it;
?The Governor’s House where the family of the last Russian emperor Nikolai II lived in exile for about 9 months.

It is worth visiting Tobolsk not only to learn more about the history of Siberia, but also to visit one of the largest hydrocarbon processing and polymer production facilities in Russia – «SIBUR Tobolsk».
